Problems arise from the practice of counting citations. Because of time lags between publication and citation, there tends to be an underestimate of scientists’ work. A further concern is that the demand for high impact ratings may subvert science; for example, by placing increasing emphasis on areas where it is possible to complete and carry out research very quickly, such as clinical trials where long-term studies are a critical element of the science.
