PhD Typical Timeline

Fall before Application

  • September – November:  Investigate UF Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences website. Compare doctoral programs.
  • October – November: Contact potential mentors.  Apply to attend doctoral student open house in December. E-mail Dr. Lori Altmann for more information.
  • December:  Prospective Doctoral Student Open House
  • January:  Submit application (due January 15)
  • February:  Notification of Acceptance

Summer before Admission:

  • Locate housing in Gainesville
  • Discuss fall classes with mentor

Year 1

  • August:  Enroll in fall classes
  • April: Form Academic Advisory Committee and register the committee with Dr. Altmann. Fill out Program Plan form.
  • April: Meet with Academic Advisory Committee to discuss Program Plan

Year 2

  • Plan and prepare for supervised teaching
  • Finish most of course work
  • Meet with Academic Advisory Committee to discuss progress toward qualifying exam

Year 3

  • Fall

    • Do Supervised Teaching (May be done in Year 2)
    • Complete any remaining required course work
  • Spring

    • Qualifying exam written and defended
    • Dissertation Supervisory Committee formed. Register committee with Dr. Altmann
  • Summer

    • Dissertation proposal written adn defended
    • Includes literature review and methods for dissertation

Year 4

  • Complete dissertation data collection
  • Complete Results and Discussion sections of dissertation
  • Defend disertation
